At a glance
- OGCI represents 12 member companies in its 2026 progress report.
- The group reports upstream methane intensity below 0.20% for a fifth consecutive year.
- Its collective 2030 aim is 0.10% upstream methane intensity.
The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative’s 2026 progress report brings together operating data from 12 member companies. Published in October, it states that aggregate upstream methane intensity remained below 0.20% for a fifth consecutive year.
OGCI also reports that its members met their collective 2025 upstream carbon-intensity ambition. The group’s next collective methane-intensity aim is 0.10% by 2030, while individual companies retain their own operating boundaries and programmes.
How the intensity measure is defined
A separate OGCI reporting framework defines intensity as Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse-gas emissions divided by oil and gas production measured in barrels of oil equivalent. The framework covers methane, carbon intensity, flaring and low-carbon investment, with definitions and reporting boundaries published alongside the annual report.
OGCI says that since 2017 its members have reduced total operated methane emissions by 63%, routine flaring by 72% and upstream carbon intensity by 24%. These are aggregate figures reported by the group across its participating companies and stated reporting periods.
The scope of the aggregate
The report notes that one member company was unable to submit audited performance data in time for publication. OGCI’s published disclaimer also states that collective reporting does not cover every activity of every member company and should be read with the accompanying methodology.
The next period will track the group’s 2030 methane-intensity aim using the definitions and boundaries set out in the reporting framework.
