A fragrance can be an introduction to a luxury house without requiring a customer to buy its clothing or accessories. It is also a deeply personal choice. That combination gives a fragrance counter a distinctive role: part discovery, part advice and part expression of a brand.
L’Oréal’s half-year results, released on 29 July 2026, reported adjusted like-for-like growth of 5.1% for its Luxe division. The company said fragrances continued to grow at a double-digit rate. Group sales reached €23.77 billion across all divisions, a much broader figure than luxury fragrance alone.
The company identified Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino among the contributors to fragrance performance. These are global results. They do not establish a UAE category growth rate, the sales of independent perfumers or the performance of any particular Dubai store.
A personal purchase needs time
Dunes Bureau’s view is that the local opportunity lies in making a crowded choice more understandable. A useful consultation starts with what the customer likes and how they expect to wear the fragrance. Staff can explain the range without treating the most expensive bottle as the inevitable destination.
The environment should support a considered decision. Clear labelling, manageable sampling and the chance to revisit a choice can make discovery less overwhelming. Customers buying gifts need a different conversation from people choosing for themselves, including clarity on presentation and any applicable exchange terms.
Retailers should also distinguish an initial purchase from a lasting relationship. Repeat orders, requests for a familiar product and interest in related ranges can inform stock decisions. A launch may draw attention, but maintaining availability of established favourites is part of dependable service.
Fragrance offers scope for storytelling, yet the experience should remain anchored in the product and the customer’s own response. Dubai businesses can compete through knowledgeable staff, a thoughtful assortment and a comfortable way to explore. International category growth makes fragrance commercially interesting; useful guidance is what gives a particular store a reason to be chosen.
