At a glance
- DXB handled 31.5 million passengers in H1 2026, down 31.3% year on year.
- Dubai Airports reported connections to 217 destinations across 99 countries at the period end.
- Passenger traffic describes the potential audience; it does not measure retail conversion or spending.
An airport customer may be choosing a considered gift, replacing a familiar product or using a short connection to browse. All are shopping against a deadline. That makes the practical experience of buying especially important, including how easily the customer can return to the journey.
Dubai Airports’ 26 August update reported 31.5 million passengers through DXB in the first half of 2026, a decline of 31.3% from the same period in 2025. At the end of June, the airport was connected to 217 destinations across 99 countries. The figures describe airport activity, not duty-free or luxury retail sales.
A passenger total is therefore only a starting point for a retailer. It does not reveal the number who pass a particular shop, have time to enter or want its products. Transfers, departures and arrivals can involve different opportunities to browse, while the mix varies with the flight schedule.
The purchase has to fit the journey
Dunes Bureau’s analysis is that service should respond to those differences. A customer in a hurry benefits from clear product information and a straightforward purchase. Someone making a higher-value decision may need more explanation, but still wants confidence that the conversation will fit the time available.
Assortment also needs to be usable in a travel setting. A gift should be easy to understand and present, while packaging should be appropriate for carrying onwards. Questions about liquids, onward travel or destination requirements should be answered using the relevant current rules, with uncertainty acknowledged rather than dismissed.
After-sales support is another part of the decision. A visitor may not return to the same airport soon. Retailers should explain the applicable service, warranty and return arrangements clearly, including any differences between an airport purchase and a domestic store purchase. Convenience at the counter should not create confusion later.
The attraction of travel retail is access to a varied international audience. Converting that access into repeat trust requires the store to work with the journey: clear choices, useful assistance and dependable follow-through. For Dubai’s airport retailers, the most valuable luxury can sometimes be a purchase that feels effortless and leaves the customer comfortably on time.
